Best Family Hotels in Costa Rica

Manuel Antonio National Park in Costa Rica

When booking accommodations for family trips, my priorities are always cost, location, and amenities. Having breakfast included at the hotel is a game-changer for me. There’s something so convenient about knowing everyone can fuel up for the day without hunting down a restaurant. And when family members wake up at different times, a hotel breakfast buffet lets everyone eat on their own schedule.

That’s why all my Costa Rica family hotel picks check these boxes: family-friendly atmosphere, complimentary breakfast, air conditioning, and a swimming pool.

Tips for Families Visiting Costa Rica

Getting Around

My family rented a car for our Costa Rica trip. Most destinations are 2.5 to 4.5 hours from San Jose (Tortuguero takes about 2.5 hours, Tamarindo around 4.5 hours). That said, you don’t necessarily need your own vehicle—many tour operators provide hotel pickups.

Other transportation options include booking airport transfers from San Jose airport to La Fortuna or Liberia airport to your hotel. Domestic flights are another possibility.

Renting a car and driving ourselves worked best for our family’s needs.

Why Costa Rica Is Great for Families

Costa Rica makes an excellent first international trip for families. English is commonly spoken in tourist destinations, which eases communication concerns. The country accommodates various budgets—you can find affordable options or splurge on luxury stays. Most importantly, Costa Rica delivers something for everyone: wildlife encounters, soothing hot springs, and exciting jungle adventures.

My Experience

I can’t recommend Costa Rica highly enough for family travel. Our trio—two adults and an 11-year-old—had an amazing experience!

We found it safe, reasonably priced, and completely unique compared to anywhere we’d visited before.

The convenience of traveling from the United States and the welcoming atmosphere make it perfect for families venturing abroad for the first time.

FAQ

What part of Costa Rica is best for families?

Our family flew into San Jose and headed to La Fortuna. The La Fortuna area near Arenal Volcano offers activities that appeal to all ages. Tamarindo, Manuel Antonio, and Monteverde are also excellent family destinations. Your ideal location depends largely on whether beach time is a priority for your trip.

Is Costa Rica safe for families?

The U.S. State Department gives Costa Rica a Level 2 advisory (exercise increased caution)—the same level as the United Kingdom and France. Travelers should remain alert in tourist areas, and note that lifeguards aren’t always present at beaches.

Costa Rica ranks first on the Global Peace Index among Central American countries and actually ranks higher (54th) than the United States (128th).

Our family felt completely safe throughout our visit. Our tour guides were knowledgeable and thorough about communicating any safety considerations for our activities. Driving in Costa Rica also felt secure.
