One of my travel philosophies is that “I can sleep just about anywhere for a night or two.” In practice, this means we have stayed in some interesting places to keep costs low on our vacations. It also means we stayed in some real gems on our Cancun to Merida road trip.
Overall, we did not have any complaints about any of our hotels. They provided a range of views and settings, while keeping our budget in check. I would stay at any one of these hotels again. These were great hotels for a Cancun to Merida road trip.

Cancun Hotels
We started our trip with two nights in Cancun. The Sotavento Hotel & Yacht Club is in the Hotel Zone, near the ferry to Isla Mujeres, included breakfast, had free parking, and was inexpensive.

We wanted to make the most of our day trip to Isla Mujeres so being near a ferry was important. The Sotavento Hotel & Yacht Club was about a block away from the Xcaret Ferry.
The included breakfast was served in an open air restaurant at the Sotavento Hotel & Yacht Club. The choices varied each day: pancakes, fresh fruit, and arroz. There were also paid options if you prefer something else.

The hotel was inexpensive. We paid US $167.26 for two nights! Overall, we had a pleasant stay and I would stay here again.
After traveling the Yucutan Peninsula, we ended our trip back in Cancun. For that last night we had stayed in the most expensive hotel of our trip — the Wyndham Garden Cancun Downtown for US $103. This hotel was a good option for us when we just needed a place to stay before our flight the next day.

More Cancun Options
📍Budget Option: If you want an alternative to Sotavento that is beachfront and all-inclusive, then the Beach Palace might be a good match.
📍Mid-Range Option: The Marriott Cancun is a good choice for a mid-range price. It is all-inclusive, beachfront, and familiar brand.
📍Luxury Option: The Grand Palladium Select Costa Mujeres is a great luxury option. It on the beach, has a whopping 8 restaurants, and a spa.
Akumal Hotels
Our next stop on our Cancun to Merida road trip was Akumal. We visited during shoulder season, which meant we got a great deal on our hotel, the Del Sol Beachfront. There were very few guests and very few people staying in Akumal during our June trip.

The Del Sol Beachfront is on the beach with a view of Half Moon Bay from every room. However, the ocean seaweed piles up during the summer months. If you plan to spend time at the beach, this hotel is not a great pick. But, if you want a place to stay while you do other activities in the area, this hotel is a hidden gem.
The hotel did not have free breakfast, and because we visited during the shoulder season, restaurant choices were limited. However, there was a restaurant next door on the beach, that served vegan and non-vegan food, and had an indoor area in case of rain. Plus there was a nearby convenience store to pick up food for breakfast.

Our hotel room had a mini-fridge and a water bottle dispenser. We were grateful to be able to refill our water bottles and chill more water in the fridge. Our room also had a balcony with a hammock! It was so relaxing to be on the balcony and listen to the waves.
The Del Sol Beachfront was a bargain at US $297 for three nights.
More Akumal Options
📍Budget Option: My pick for a budget option is the Del Sol Beachfront. The hotel is on the beach and its quiet. There is also a restaurant next door with vegetarian options.
📍Mid-Range Option: My mid-range choice is the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort & Spa All Inclusive. You can’t go wrong with an all inclusive resort if you want to be sure you have everything from multiple swimming pools to plenty of restaurants.
📍Luxury Option: For a luxury say, try the Family Selection at Grand Palladium Kantenah Resort & Spa – All Inclusive. This resort has everything to keep everyone in your group happy and entertained.
Uxmal Hotels
I had no idea what to expect from the Uxmal Maya Resort at Uxmal. The photos on the website looked amazing, but they also looked like stock photography. I even warned my family as we got closer that I was a bit nervous about what we might have gotten into with this reservation.
But, the places was gorgeous! The photo of the property is my photo. The views were unreal and the perfect place to stay if you want to watch the sunrise or the sunset.

Breakfast is not included at this hotel, but the hotel does have a restaurant. We ate dinner outside by the pool and then had breakfast inside the restaurant in the morning. Both meals were great!

One small warning. Be sure to bring cash with you because the internet was spotty for credit card transactions. We were able to use our credit card at dinner, but the internet was down at breakfast and we had to pay with cash.
The Uxmal Maya Resort was another bargain for only US $63.63 for the night!
More Uxmal Options
📍Budget Option: My budget pick is the Uxmal Maya Resort. The hotel had a restaurant, pool, pool table, and an amazing view.
📍Mid-Range Option: My mid-range choice is the Eco-Hotel Nueva Altia. It is about 9 miles from Uxmal. The hotel has a coffee shop, garden views, and a swimming pool.
📍Luxury Option: For a luxury stay, try The Pickled Onion B&B. This B&B is about 9 miles from Uxmal. The B&B has a restaurant, a pool, and thatched bungalows!
Merida Hotels
We stayed two nights in Merida at the Holiday Inn Express. This hotel is near the mall and convention center, so you will have to drive to see the sights in downtown Merida. The hotel, however, is within walking distance of the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya.

This hotel was also free due to hotel points! I did not have many IHG points available, but Merida was inexpensive enough that I had enough points to cover our stay here. Plus, the hotel came with free breakfast.

More Merida Options
📍Budget Option: My budget pick is the Holiday Inn Express. The hotel has breakfast and is within walking distance of the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya.
📍Mid-Range Option: My mid-range choice is the Acqua in Bocca. It is 0.4 miles from downtown. The hotel has a saltwater swimming pool, yoga studio, and breakfast.
📍Luxury Option: For a luxury stay, try Decu Downtown, a short 0.4 miles from downtown. This property has a swimming pool, spa, and a restaurant.
Overall
Overall, I don’t have any complaints about these hotels for a Cancun to Merida road trip They were priced right and either included breakfast or there was a nearby breakfast option. These were perfect hotels for a Cancun to Merida road trip.
