The view of Uxmal from the Uxmal Maya Resort

One of my travel philosophies is that “I can sleep just about anywhere for a night or two.” In practice, this means we have stayed in some interesting places to keep costs low.

For our Cancun roadtrip around the Yucatan Peninsula, I tried to stay at least two nights in each hotel, but ended up with two hotels that were a single night stay. It’s a lot of work to change hotels every night so finding a place in the middle of several activities, like Akumal, was helpful to reduce the number of hotel changes.

Overall, we did not have any complaints about any of our hotels. They provided a range of views and settings, while keeping our budget in check. I would stay at any one of these hotels again. These were great hotels for a Cancun road trip.

Cancun – Sotavento Hotel & Yacht Club

Sotavento Hotel & Yacht Club - a view of the pool and breakfast area
Sotavento Hotel & Yacht Club

We stayed for two nights in Cancun. The Sotavento Hotel & Yacht Club is in the Hotel Zone, near a ferry to Isla Mujeres, included breakfast, had free parking, and was inexpensive. We wanted to make the most of our day trip to Isla Mujeres so being near a ferry was important. The Sotavento Hotel & Yacht Club was about a block away from the Xcaret Ferry.

I do not like having to find breakfast, so having a hotel with free breakfast is my preference. Breakfast was served in an open air restaurant at the Sotavento Hotel & Yacht Club. The free options varied each day: pancakes, fresh fruit, arroz; but there were also paid options if you prefer something else.

The hotel was inexpensive. We paid US $167.26 for two nights! This hotel was not full of English-speaking Americans and Canadians. Most guests were Spanish-speaking.

Overall, we had a pleasant stay. I would stay here again.

Akumal – Del Sol Beachfront

We visited Akumal in the shoulder season, which meant we got a great deal on our hotel, the Del Sol Beachfront. There were very few guests and very few people staying in Akumal during our June trip.

The Del Sol Beachfront is on the beach with a view of Half Moon Bay from every room. However, the ocean seaweed piles up during the summer months. If you plan to spend time at the beach, this hotel is not a great pick. But, if you want a place to stay while you do other activities in the area, this hotel is a hidden gem.

The hotel did not have free breakfast, and because we visited during the shoulder season, restaurant choices were limited. However, there was a restaurant next door on the beach, that served vegan and non-vegan food, and had an indoor area in case of rain.

Our hotel room had a mini-fridge and a water bottle dispenser. We were grateful to be able to refill our water bottles and chill more water in the fridge. Our room also had a balcony with a hammock! It was so relaxing to be on the balcony and listen to the waves.

The Del Sol Beachfront was a bargain at US $297 for three nights.

Uxmal – Uxmal Maya Resort

I had no idea what to expect from the Uxmal Maya Resort at Uxmal. The photos on the website looked amazing, but they also looked like stock photography. I even warned my family as we got closer that I was a bit nervous about what we might have gotten into with this reservation.

But, this hotel was another surprise! The hotel had amazing views of the jungle and Uxmal along with a great outdoor pool area and a pool table.

Breakfast is not included at this hotel, but the hotel has a restaurant. We ate dinner outside by the pool and then had breakfast inside the restaurant in the morning.

Be sure to bring cash with you because the internet was spotty for credit card transactions. We were able to use our credit card at dinner, but the internet was down at breakfast and we had to pay cash.

The Uxmal Maya Resort was another bargain for only US $63.63 for the night!

Merida – Holiday Inn Express

We stayed two nights in Merida at the Holiday Inn Express. This hotel is near the mall and convention center, so you will have to drive to see the sights in downtown Merida. The hotel, however, is within walking distance of the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya.

This hotel was free due to hotel points! I did not have many IHG points available, but Merida was inexpensive enough that I had enough points to cover our stay here. Plus, the hotel came with free breakfast.

Cancun – Wyndham Garden Cancun Downtown

Our most expensive hotel was for the last night of our trip. We stayed at the Wyndham Garden Cancun Downtown for US $103. The hotel included breakfast.

We really only need a place to sleep because we knew we would get to Cancun later in the day and our flight was the next day. I went with this hotel because of price, location, free breakfast, and so I could earn loyalty points with Wyndham.

Overall

Overall, I don’t have any complaints about these hotels. They were priced right and either included breakfast or there was a nearby breakfast option. These were perfect hotels for a Cancun roadtrip.
